Just Because it's "Orthodox" Doesn't Mean it's True

Always remember, just because something is labelled "orthodox" doesn't mean it's true. Heresy is often just the rejection of commonly accepted error.

This is the essence of my life philosophy, along with "question everything... even this." As most people do, I began life accepting that most of the standard "orthodox" beliefs were true, be they theological, economic, social or political beliefs. Thankfully, if there's one thing that my parents taught me well (even if they didn't always like it when I practised what they preached), it was to question authority and not just assume something is "good" or true just because a person who (or writing that) might be highly respected by certain people tells me it is. So, everything else aside, I am thankful to my parents for teaching me the value of investigating and examining truth claims for myself rather than just blindly following the crowd.

Christian Heretic meet the Jewish Heretic. So nice to make your acquaintance! Look forward to dialoging. My Holy Heretic blog has been rather reclusive, so I'm making a bold step out into the blogosphere. Will add your link.

Hi there, welcome to my blog. Good to see there are other heretics out there too. :)

Hi! Just read "Just because It's Orthodox, It Doesn't Mean It's True." And guess what? I so totally agree! I mean, look at how Christians preach against masturbation, even as they all seem to admit that it isn't mentioned anywhere in the Bible. And yet, they continue to blindly accept that it is wrong even though it isn't, and they don't want to admit that they are basing what they believe on what they are being told. Forget the facts that are really true. These Christians don't want to believe them, so they call the rest of us heretics and condemn us to hell for telling the truth while continuing to believe their own lies (and the lies of their pastors, friends, etc). They also don't want to admit that they are adding to Scripture that was never mentioned by God Himself, a crime that Jesus warns us about in, ironically enough, Scripture itself. It seems as though Christians are more interested in fire and brimstone preaching than they are in preaching the Gospel and in helping us develop an intimate relationship with Jesus, which, in turn, causes a lot of us to struggle with sin. Some Christians give up their faith altogether and never go back. They simply can't take the guilt and shame of being human anymore no matter how hard they try to do what's right. I'm in that same boat, except I'm still determined to never leave my faith. Why? Just because I'm struggling to do what's right, and I'm dealing with Christians who don't understand what I am going through and leave me to believe that everything I do is wrong and nothing I do is right, and I'm still not sure if I really will be with God in Heaven when I die and face judgment, it doesn't mean that I should leave my faith and never be a Christian again. Anyway, sorry if I got a bit off track there, okay? The bottom line to your blog is this: I don't have to agree with everything that I am told if I don't want to. I can refuse to blindly follow something that may or may not be true and still be right with God. Just because it's orthodox, it doesn't mean it's true. Man, I sure hope I'm not condemned to suffer for all of eternity just because I can't help speaking my mind and criticizing others!
